Plumbing Inspection in Brooklyn, NY

Brooklyn is settled. Only 14% of owner households moved in during 2018 or later, which means most of the plumbing here has not been looked at by anybody in a long time.

The one-paragraph answer

Brooklyn is settled, with 14% of owner households having moved in since 2018. The plumbing most likely to matter in a house held that long is the part no standard inspection covers, which is the buried sewer lateral.

PresalePipe is a referral service, not a contractor or a home inspector. We connect homeowners and buyers with independent contractors. Contractors are required to hold whatever credential their state or municipality demands. Every state page sets out who licenses plumbers there and where to check, so you can confirm before work begins. We carry out no inspections and no work, we do not set prices, and we never charge homeowners anything — the contractors in our network pay us when we route them a call.

When Brooklyn moved in

Where houses stay put, an inspection is a rare event, and the report on file — if there is one — describes a building that has since had a decade or more of ordinary use.

This counts when the CURRENT occupant moved in, so it measures recent moves as a share of the housing stock — not a rate of sales per year.

What the inspection will not cover

ASHI asks for the predominant material of the water service, distribution and drain-waste-vent pipes to be described. Predominant is an honest word for a house that has been altered more than once, and it is not a complete answer about any single run.

What it is required to cover

Both standards cover the interior drain, waste and vent system, and ASHI asks for the predominant material of the service, distribution and DWV pipes to be described. A report naming one material is describing the majority of the house, not every run in it.

Worth ten minutes before you read your own report: everything the two standards require, in the order an inspector does it.

What to do about it

If you are selling, establish it before somebody else does. The same finding is worth more to a buyer who discovered it than to one who was told.

Both standards are public. Start with the exclusions, then the obligations, and read the sewer scope separately — it is ordered on its own for a reason.

Checking a credential in New York

New York issues no state plumbing license. New York City licenses Master and Journeyman Plumbers through the Department of Buildings; elsewhere in the state it is your own city, town or county. Start here. Ask the contractor which municipality licenses them and confirm it with that office before work begins.

Inspection report in front of you?Read us the plumbing lines and nothing else — we do not want the document. We will route you to a contractor covering your area who can quote the items on it, and you are never charged by us. Beyond the report, Brooklyn is covered for plumbing of any sort.
